The USA has crowned its 2008 male and female karaoke USA championship winners at the KWC-USA in Cincinnati, Ohio This year’s female winner Barbara Robbins, of Kentucky has claimed her second national title in a row. Congratulations Barbara! She won the finals with Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” In the male category, the torch has passed from singing sensation Michael Moses Griffin, who won last year and went on to place 2nd in the 2007 world championships- to country gent Alex Peak of Ohio, who will accompany Ms. Robbins on an expense paid trip to Lahti, Finland to represent the United States in this year’s Karaoke World Championships. Please sign our guestbook with messages for our two winners showing your support!
Mollie Grieser, of Indiana tip-toed on stage, grabbed the microphone and sheepishly announced, “I’m so nervous I’m about to piss in my pants…” Lucky for her, she held it through a solid rendition of “Dr. Feelgood.” She placed 2nd overall in the KWC-USA. She was just one of the contestants with a whooping case of the nerves in the nation’s ultimate karaoke championship.
Just yesterday these men and women were cleaning out horse stalls in Indiana or waiting tables in Tennessee, but on this last day of summer this group of 12 semi-finalists were strutting their stuff on stage amidst bright lights, a spectacular background of colored water fountains, and a happy audience of onlookers at Kings Island Adventure Park in Ohio. The competition, which lasted just over 5 hours was hosted by the well-known amusement park, and sponsored by companies such as popular karaoke CD maker, Chartbuster Karaoke.
These competitors are as ordinary as you will get. They literally walked off the streets, into a local karaoke contest at a participating bar, pub or tavern and went on to win the state championship, a regional championship, which finally brought them to the stage at King’s Island. This year’s male winner, Alex Peak, is a welder from Eaton, Ohio who has never even been on a plane, let alone a national singing champ. He won with this rousing rendition of “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.”
Better Than American Idol
In this age of American Idol, this karaoke competition seems to offer main street America a more sane and democratic opportunity to be recognized as performers by their peers and maybe, just maybe, get a chance at a recording contract. Wendell Payne, the organizer of the event explains that there are two main advantages that this competition has over American Idol; first, it does not have an age limit, so talented crooners over the age of 28 can have a crack at stardom; and second, the championship goes to both a male and female winner.
Serious Business
As the competition grows each year, Payne says that the level of professionalism increases as well. In regards to how polished and practiced the contestants were this year, Payne says “they were head and heels above last year’s group. . . 95% of the contestants were very serious about this competition, there was a lot of nerves offstage.” Some may say that “professional karaoke” is an oxymoron, but there is no denying that karaoke is entertainment, not mere spectator sport, “the crowd always sings along,” notes Payne. The better the entertainment the more involved the crowd becomes. Some winners of the world championships have received recording contracts, so karaoke isn’t just amateur hour anymore, and contestants know this. The karaoke industry has been estimated to be worth anywhere between $300 million and $7 billion, and a based on CD sales alone. Bars and taverns hosting karaoke also rely on the extra customers and revenues that karaoke nights bring in. Payne describes half of the participants in the competition as plain old karaoke addicts, and the other half are serious about being a professional singer one day. But Payne, cautions that just like there is a thin line between love and hate, so it is between the self proclaimed karaoke addicts and the karaoke dreamers, in most cases he says, the two become intertwined and almost no one will turn down going to the World Championships and a chance at stardom. “this is the stuff that dreams are made of” says Payne. So American Idol, eat your heart out.
