Heavy Metal Karaoke: Bring it On

This ain’t your daddy’s Heavy metal karaoke. Its not even your older brothers’. Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob Blasko is bringing you heavy metal karaoke sans the lame backing tracks or the mediocre local band; how about a real, professional set of headbangers to party with? How about banning Sweet Caroline from the song list and rocking to Crazy Train with real rock legends?

Well if you are in Hollywood you can. Blasko has put together his own band of seasoned musicians such as Tommy Victor (Prong, Danzig, Ministry) on guitar and Tommy Clufetos (Rob Zombie, Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent) on drums.

In an interview on Barebonesmusic.com  Blasko explained that the concept was inspired from punk rock karaoke and the live band karaoke phenomenon in general, but he wanted to improve on that concept by taking it to the next level, with actual professional, touring musicians. This A-list musician concept will surely be a hit not only with karaoke junkies, but metal music lovers in general. “There are enough metal heads in Hollywood to be successful,” he says.

Blasko says that his aim with the project is to create a  unique karaoke experience that really allows the singer to connect with the audience. That means the song list won’t have deep tracks like “Electric Funeral” but will have the standards like “Paranoid”.

Heavy Metal Karaoke is just one of several projects that Blasko has been keeping busy with despite the fact that he will soon be working on another album with Ozzy and following up with a tour. He is a self-proclaimed student of the music biz as part owner of an artist management company and an executive for a clothing line.

When asked if getting this karaoke band together is a precursor to starting a new band, Blasko says absolutely not. “This is not Velvet Revolver part two,” Blasko answers, referring to the rock supergroup formed from former Guns N’ Roses, Stone Temple Pilots and Wasted Youth.

While heavy metal karaoke is designed to be a fun participatory sport for both singer and audience the celebrity factor is always looming when famous, successful musicians are behind the music and Blasko was asked the burning question that many fans will certainly be wondering themselves; will this event be a chance for good singer/performers to get discovered? Will Blasko be the next Oprah? plucking nameless karaoke singers from obscurity and making them famous? Well “no”, says Blasko, that is not the purpose of Heavy Metal karaoke but he won’t discourage ambitious auditioners; “If that’s your agenda then f…. bring it on.”
