That is not until Alex Attardo graced the audition stage in episode 2 of Idol’s Season’s 10. The 18 year old bragged about completing Idol camp when he was 15 and then proceeded to belt out “Proud Mary.” It did not end well, and those who watched I am sure couldn’t help but think that Idol camp must be one big joke.

So what is Idol camp anyway? Well it turns out that Idol camp is nested in the Alpine mountains of California on Lake Arrowhead. The camp is a $3000, two week indulgence for kids who can’t wait to see their name in lights. In 2008, an L.A. Times article reported on Idol camp. Here are some of the camp’s features:

Kids at camp can take classes on everything from beat boxing to dance. Culture at camp is such that kids will stand up and sing on cue, they love any camera pointed at them, yet they are very supportive of each other. They are mentored by a steady stream of Idol alumnus who come not just to sing a few tunes and pat them on the back, but to actually hangout with them, eat meals with them, and watch them perform. Past guest alums have included Lakisha Jones (season 6), Vonzell Solomon (season 4), Jon Peter Lewis (season 3), Paris Bennett (season 5), and Chris Sleigh (season 6) who hosted the camps’ karaoke idol contest.

No Idol camp would be complete without a chance for kids to spend their parent’s money on pop culture trinkets; so there is an Idol store full of Idol branded merchandise to take home as keepsakes. Then there is the grand finale, which is the final production number that the camp will put on for parents and counsel ours on the final night.

The camp of course offers many other activities that a typical campground would such as horse riding, atv riding and other activities. The main focus is on the singing and dancing however, and according to the L.A. Times reporter that visited the camp, they mean business.
