As it turns out, Ms. DeGeneres is an avid American Idol fan, and she claims in interviews and on her show that she has never missed an episode. So fond she is of the Idol show, that she even hosted Idol’s 2007 charity show dubbed “Idol Gives Back.” This previous work with Idol helped spark the initial interest in her and luckily, Idol’s producers did not have to wonder how she would do as a judge since she had already done a guest judging stint at another Fox show, “So You Think You Can Dance, “ with much success. The deal was finalized within two weeks with both parties excited about season 9, which begins in January. Details are not set yet on when Ellen will join the judges but they anticipate that she will be there by Hollywood week, which is usually scheduled for taping in November but instead will take place in January. Paula’s Shoes The choice of DeGeneres for Idol judge already has some Idol watchers fuming about her lack of experience in the music industry, but Fox producers point to Ellen’s carefully cultivated image as an all around, world-class entertainer. And Ellen will tell you that that’s ultimately what its all about on Idol; entertainment. As for music industry experience, many people overlook the combined experience of the remaining three judges, two of which while not mega pop stars- have considerable experience as performers. Music industry experience aside, Ellen will most certainly bring her star power to the show. She has carved out a substantial niche for herself on the small screen. In addition to her daytime talk show she hosted the Oscars and the Emmy’s, written a bestseller and starred in her own sitcom. As a stand-up comic, she has been in the trenches of the entertainment industry and certainly understands the nuance of ‘personality,’ and what it takes to make it in show-business. So how will Ellen fill Paula’s shoes? Ellen has already told the media that she plans to have a heart when it comes to the critiquing on the show, so in that way she will continue in Paula’s tradition. This of course will put her in direct conflict with Idol’s sharp tongued and notoriously “heartless” judge, Simon Cowell and of course that is what the producers want; tension between Simon and another judge. Ellen DeGeneres' New Gig as Idol Judge

Last Wednesday, Ellen DeGeneres announced on her show that “she” will be American Idol’s fourth judge, permanently replacing Paula Abdul. Ellen, the comedienne long known for her rambling, ‘Seinfeld-esque’ monologues and her wacky dance intro that begins every Ellen show, was considered a surprising pick, and the show’s producers even admit that Ellen’s name just came up “all of the sudden,” according to Fox network exec Mike Darnell during an interview with Variety.
