Karaoke Regulars:
The Disillusioned Diva

![]()
"Disillusioned” refers not to the Diva’s state of mind but the audiences’. While she is a rarity at the karaoke club, you know her when you see her. She is that charming middle-aged woman who “just looks” like she has one hell of a set of pipes on her. She is well-dressed, round, her hair is perfectly coiffed and she carries herself like a true diva. Her presence on the stage inspires images of Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, or Patti Labelle. As she clears her throat and looks down her nose at the audience – some of whom have even stopped eating, chatting and drinking in anticipation- you just know you are in for a lyrical treat. . . until she sings.
The booming voice you were expecting turns out to be similar to what President Bush choking on a pretzel might sound like; wickedly funny but generally disconcerting.
As your grand illusions about this diva are quickly “dissed,” you must still listen to her struggle through what seems like an eternity of choruses until her poverty-stricken voice box ceases to vibrate through the unwitting microphone.
Advice: Only courteous applause please.
