The NiteClub Host A.K.A. "Microphone Hog"
Youv'e seen him or her. They are almost always a regular and have anointed themselves as the first assistant to the KJ. They are your host for the entire evening whether you like it or not. They give you the background to each song they sing. “This was originally recorded by the Monkies,” or they tell you what inspired them to sing this song tonite; “My Grandma used to hum this little diddy to me at night, she died 28 years ago last month…” This Host also serves as the newswire just in case you weren’t paying attention to the 12 flat screens at the bar or do not own a cellphone.
These people are real characters and are deeply entranced by the sound of their own voice reverberating through the microphone. Most of them had no friends in school and spent their younger years yelling into Styrofoam cups for entertainment.
Advice: Ignoring them is not the answer, that just encourages them and sucks up valuable karaoke time for everyone. Instead, engage them, implore them to sing, make them think you just can’t wait to hear their song. If all else fails, walk up to the mike and start talking into it along with them. Sharing the spotlight for this narcissist is like giving Kryptonite to Superman. They will do anything to get you away from the spotlight, like shut up and sing.
