here are some karaoke nights in America where no one knows who Billy Joel is, Johnny Cash has no cache, and Beyonce’ might as well “Put a Lid on It.”
Yes there are some places where a conga line is more likely to form than an Electric Slide line, and that’s okay for the growing number of Spanish-speaking karaoke bar-goers who are thrilled at the burgeoning growth in Spanish-language karaoke tracks. KJ’s in Florida, especially in the Broward County and Palm Beach areas – say they are experiencing unprecedented demand for Spanish titles as more and more Hispanic karaoke singers are joining the revelry. In many karaoke spots in Palm Beach, Spanish karaoke has already morphed from an “alternative” selection of tracks relegated to special nights every so often, to the dominate language every night.
At Mamacita’s Bar & Grill in Hollywood, Florida Spanish karaoke dominates, with Mexican rancheras and Dominican bachatas performed in rapid succession. When the occasional English song is mixed into the rotation, most of the crowd takes the opportunity to take a bathroom or a smoke break, according to the venues’ KJ, Amando Saenz. Bilingual KJ’s such as Saenz are finding themselves in great demand as Hispanic customers increasingly seek them out for various special occasions such as weddings, parties, and “quinseaneras” celebrations (latin version of a debutante ball).
KJ Bernard Gremly, who runs a Spanish-dominated karaoke night at an
upscale steakhouse in Weston, Florida, tells the SunSentinel.com that the “American crowd gets into it” as well. From the KJ’s point of view the Spanish-speaking karaoke customers represent more growth opportunity in a niche of the music market that has felt the pain of the current recession. From the customers point of view, it opens up a new world of possibility as well as giving many first generation Hispanics a good reason to break away from the Spanish language television channel for a few hours and get out there and sing!
