For the first time in history, the Beatles music is available in interactive video game format. On September 9, MTV Games in cooperation with EMI Music and Sony Music Publishing – released the first Beatles: Rock Band game for three major videogame consoles; Microsoft’s Xbox, Sony’s Playstation, and Nintendo’s Wii systems.
In just two weeks since its release, the games maker says that 25% of its inventory is already gone, and there is sure to be Christmas shortage. No doubt, sales of the title are at least partially fueled by the recent price cut for the Playstation 3. The game features the ability for three-part vocal harmonies so that three singer/players can harmonize together just as the Beatles did. It also features actual “in-studio audio chatter” among the band members in between songs. These are audio clips of conversations that have never been released to the public until now. Players can also choose between five iconic Beatles venues; The Cavern Club, the set of the Ed Sullivan Show, Budokan, Shea Stadium, and the legendary rooftop of Apple Records. While Beatles Rock Band is compatible with all Rock Band instrument controllers as well as most Guitar Hero and other third party music video game peripherals and microphones, it also offers additional, special edition instrument controllers that are replicas of the instruments made famous by the Beatles, such as McCartney’s Hofner Violin Bass and John Lennon’s signature Rickenbacker 325 Guitar. While the game has debuted to very good reviews, the only consistent criticism has been its song list of 45 songs is much shorter than the typical 70 or 80 songs that most similar games include. The consensus seems to be however, that these are 45 BEATLES songs, thus there are far more valuable than your average song. In addition, the games maker promises more songs to made available for download at The Beatles: Rock Band Music Store for $1.99, those first songs coming from the Abbey Road album on October 20, followed by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in November and Rubber Soul in December. The game is priced at $59.99 in the U.S. The Initial song list is below.
