No Doubt Sues Band Hero Maker Over "Bad Karaoke"
The newly released version of Band Hero will feature among other things, rock band No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani singing in a male voice about having sex with prostitutes. Well, that’s what happens when you can figure out how to get Stefani’s avatar to sing the Rolling Stone’s “Honkey Tonk Woman.” In fact, the game lets you have No Doubt sing lots of other bands’ songs; something that No Doubt says they did not sign up for when they agreed to let gamemaker Activision use their likeness for the game.
No Doubt is claiming that they never signed up to be a “virtual karaoke act,” and they have the lawyers to prove it. On November 4th, one day after the game hit stores, No Doubt filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court for breach of contract. Activision of course maintains that it was within its legal rights to include the band’s avatars into these additional features of the game. Apparently, No Doubt is simply joining a growing group of disaffected artists who do not appreciate Activision’s creativity. Earlier this year Courtney Love and Jon Bon Jovi spoke out against Kurt Cobain’s avatar singing Bon Jovi in Guitar Hero 5.
