Steve Jobs, the icon of tech is dead. Many networks, newspapers, magazines and websites will pay tribute to him in the coming days and weeks. We will learn what he did for personal computing, the cell phone industry, and the music industry. And of course he gave us ITunes. But what about how he changed our lives personally?, beyond the simple conveniences of the products he inspired. Everyone has a story, here’s mine.

Throughout the nineties, I like many other weekend warriors were out there jogging through the streets of suburbia tethered to my Sony Walkman. Back then, it seemed to be such a great convenience to be able to run and listen to a radio, a tape, or even a CD, but in reality it was a great burden. Radio stations had too many commercials, tapes and CDs especially, skipped during most runs – requiring you to stop and fiddle with it during the run. For those of us who lack the mental fortitude to run to the sound of our own shallow breaths, the walkman was the lesser of two evils. Enter Steve Jobs.

In 2002 I purchased my first IPod and I was free. I could run for miles and miles as a steady stream of every favorite song I ever knew played uninterrupted into my ears. Without all the stopping and starting during runs, I actually got into the best shape I had ever been in. Logging in more miles a week than ever. I lost 15lbs thanks to Steve.

I like to think he heard me out there on my son’s High School track, banging my walkman on the fencepost hoping to unstick it. Or maybe he saw me out there with my fanny pack of CD’s. Whatever the case, I think even non-techies like me if they think hard enough can find a way that Steve changed their life. Indeed he freed us all from our Walkmans, our desktops, our laptops, our tiny Blackberry screens. For that we thank you.

Sincerely,

Michelle Davis, Editor
