The newest supergroup may have just been formed. The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger and accomplished music producer and former Eurythmics member Dave Stewart, apparently decided one day while chatting on the telephone that they should get a group together. A little over a year ago they found themselves in a Los Angeles studio making music with Bob Marley’s youngest son Damian, British soul singer Joss Stone, and Indian music composer of Slum Dog Millionaire fame A.R. Rahman. The session went spectacularly well and they now have 16 to 18 songs according to Rahman. Why pick group members from completely different music genres? Apparently that was the whole point in the first place. Jagger and Stewart were interested in the convergence of diverse musical styles as Rahman confirmed on a Facebook wall post “[the songs] all have a world sound by contributions from all of us.” Don’t assume that Jagger will be the sole vocal lead in this supergroup; he tells Rolling Stone that he actually plays guitar and the harmonica on some of the tracks and there are a total of four vocalists on the album, schedule to debut sometime this September. Will Stones fans be able to relate to the Superheavy collaboration? Jagger thinks they will. Jagger thinks they may find the music a bit odd at first, but insists that most of the tracks are “accessible.” We have all seen Jagger rock a harmonica before, but its hard to imagine his wiry figure subdued behind a guitar. While it is hard to imagine what Superheavy will actually sound like, it would be safe to assume that these guys know what they are doing; They have 11 Grammys between them. As for the really cool name “Superheavy,” Jagger says that was just a fluke, Damien Marley was just jamming in the studio one day improvising some lyrics saying, Heavy, heavy, heavy, heavy, super heavy . .. it sounded really cool so it stuck.
