The Karaoke Channel lists its greatest karaoke love tunes, Billboard Brings Sexy Back, sort of, and finding the worst love song ever made.

The Karaoke Channel announced its top 20 karaoke love songs, just in time for Valentine's Day. The songs were selected from the Channel's 18,000 title karaoke song library. Their method of selection was not song popularity; rather Karaoke Channel staff experts hand-picked these tunes based on "romantic lyrics" and "smooth melody lines."
These 20 karaoke songs (listed on right) represent your best chance at love behind the karaoke mic according to the experts that compiled the list. The list as a whole seems to be pretty monotone in terms of music genres though, as it seems to sample only popular tunes from the pop music and soft rock categories. In other words, there are no 'deep tracks' on this list; you will not find Bad Company's "Feel Like Making Love," or Meat Loaf's "I Would Do Anything for Love," or anything by Barry White.
On the other hand, the top 20 does include 6 karaoke songs that are on ASCAP's (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) list of all time popular love songs. The ASCAP list is based on actual performances of the song as opposed to "expert compilation."
The Top Karaoke Love Song
"Unchained Melody," The Karaoke Channel's number one karaoke love song, also makes ASCAP's list as the number one love song of the 1950's. This timeless tune was reborn in the blockbuster film "Ghost," which made spinning pottery well, . . really hot (Ever wonder how they pitched that scene to studio execs? It's gonna have Demi and Patrick in a smoking hot love scene with pottery and the Righteous Brothers in the background! . . . Really?).

"Velveeta Sexy"
Billboard.com also got on the Valentines Day bandwagon with its own list; the top 50 "sexiest" love songs of all time. This time, the list was generated by a seemingly trustworthy formula; how well the song did on the charts, but surely there was a rounding error or something because Olvia Newton-John's "Physical" made it to the number one spot. That made Billboard the target of many confounded bloggers who lament, it wasn't sexy in 1981 and it ain't sexy now.
Perhaps Billboard could make this wrong right with the remaining tracks in the top 5, which are as follows:
Tonight's the Night (Rod Stewart)
I'll Make Love To You (Boyz II Men)
Too Close (Next)
Let's Get it On (Marvin Gaye)
These four tunes may or may not make up for the Olivia Newton-John calamity, but they sit well on the sturdy floor that Sandra D provides, in other words, they can't be worse; and as one blogger for the Atlanta Journal Constitution put it; "Physical” is to sex as Velveeta is to food. It might get sweaty like sex, but it’s also plastic and not much like the real thing.
If we can't quite agree on the best love songs, perhaps we could rally around the "worst" love songs. Readers of Canada's Edmonton Journal voted for the 10 worst love songs and the creepy "Your'e Having My Baby" came up on top. For all you Paul Anka diehard fans ready to blame the Canadians for their obvious lack of taste, I have to tell you, a 2006 CNN poll of 5,800 people ame to the very same conclusion. Perhaps its a North American thing, but hard not to notice. There were some other widely disdained tunes that made the hated list including: "Feelings," "You Light Up My Life," and the official stalker theme song "Every Breathe You Take," by the Police. However, I do take offense to Minnie Riperton's 1975 song "Loving You" making number 2, but then again on further reflection, I understand.
